Darmstadt, Germany 4th May - 5th August 2018

The second show of 2018 is now open in Germany at the Hessischer Landesmuseum. Undoubtedly one of the most atmospheric displays of the Microsculpture project so far, the exhibition includes all of the giant prints, interactive touchscreens and real insects. Also on display are a range of beautiful crafted haptic models that enable the viewer to touch and feel the contours and textures of the microscopic forms, a wonderful addition to the show! The exhibition is open for three months so if you are in the Frankfurt area make time to pop along to Darmstadt and experience the giant bugs! The Microsculpture exhibition is also still on show at Naturama in Denmark and closes 25th November, so there is plenty of time to catch that exhibition too.

Svendborg, Denmark 6th February - 25th November 2018

The first Microsculpture exhibition of 2018 is now open in Svendborg in Denmark. After a hugely successful show at the Natural History Museum in Copenhagen, the giant insects will be staying in Denmark for another 10 months! At the same time Microsculpture will be exhibited at the Hessischer Landesmueum in Darmstadt, Germany between 4th May - 5th August 2018. If that is not enough, Microsculpture will be travelling to the USA later in the year, details of which will be posted on microsculpture.net and Levon’s social media channels. Stay tuned for an exciting 2018!

This page is brought to you by the OWL at Purdue (https://owl.english.purdue.edu/). When printing this page, you must include the entire legal notice at bottom.

This resource was written by Jaclyn M. Wells . Last edited by Allen Brizee on March 23, 2009 . Summary: This resource covers methods of developing ideas for the essay you will be required to write.

Brainstorming Ideas

After you have a good grasp of what the prompt is asking, you should figure out how you will respond. You may have heard teachers refer to this stage as pre-writing. At this stage, you should brainstorm many ideas. You won’t necessarily use all of the ideas you come up with, but it’s helpful to have lots of ideas to choose from when planning your essay. After you have gathered many ideas, you’ll work on figuring out your main idea. Even though you may feel rushed to begin writing right away, it’s important to take some time to go through this step to make sure you have an interesting main idea and plenty of supporting points. You might use one or both of the following methods to gather your ideas. Experiment with both of them to see what best helps you brainstorm your ideas.

Drawing a map of your ideas is helpful in many ways. First, people often find that seeing a visual representation of their thoughts helps them to add more ideas and sort through them. Also, drawing a map might help you see how your thoughts connect to one another, which will help you when you begin organizing your essay. In the center of the map, write your topic and draw a circle around it. When you come up with a new idea, write it down, draw a circle around it, and draw a line to show how it connects to the topic in the center and/or the other ideas you’ve written down. Look at the main ideas you’ve written and see if you can think of other ideas that connect to them. Remember that it is okay—actually, it is great—if you have many ideas right now. You won’t necessarily use all of them in your essay, but all it’s important to collect many ideas right now. The map below uses the sample essay topic from the previous resource to show you what an idea map might look like. To practice with this brainstorming method, draw your own idea map using the sample essay topic.

Rather than draw a map, some people prefer to brainstorm by simply listing their ideas. This is a fairly straightforward method of brainstorming ideas. Though not as visual as an idea map, lists are a great way of finding and recording your ideas. Idea lists help you “mine” your ideas so that you have many to choose from and also help you find a main idea and supporting points, which will be useful as you plan your essay. At the top of your list, write your topic. Writing out your topic helps you focus on it. Then, list the ideas you think of in the order that they come to you. You can use many lists to find supporting points for each of your ideas. The lists below use the sample essay topic above to show you what idea lists might look like. Example Idea List What is an important goal I have for the next few years?

The ongoing information and machine learning revolution has had enormous impact on almost every aspect of society and the workplace. The Operations Research and Financial Engineering (ORFE) department's research and teaching focuses on the foundations of data science, probabilistic modeling, and optimal decision-making under uncertainty, with applications in the physical and biological sciences, economics and finance, energy and environmental science, transportation and astrophysics. The core graduate and undergraduate programs provide strong technical grounding in the interlinked areas of statistics, stochastics, and optimization. The synergy between these subjects has been the primary driver behind many important breakthroughs in each of these areas over the past decade. For example, novel insights in large-scale optimization and high-dimensional random structures play an increasingly crucial role in the statistical analysis of massive datasets that arise in areas as diverse as the human genome to financial data. Similarly, ideas from statistics and machine learning have emerged as central tools in the development of new algorithms for making on-line decisions and for other complex optimization problems that find applications ranging from clinical trials to internet advertising.

We are currently 15 faculty, 52 Ph.D. students and 215 undergraduate majors. In these pages, you will find details of our research, teaching, graduate and undergraduate programs, and conferences and other events that we organize and host. Thank you for visiting our site and your interest in ORFE.
